The costs in detail

When the door lock is mentioned, it is usually only about the lock cylinder. How high the bill for the exchange will be depends on how stable and secure the new lock should be. The design also plays a role. Another important decision factor is whether all keys have been lost or only some and how many keys are needed.

You have to pay for the lock and key

Locking cylinders of security level 1 cost between 10 and 30 euros. A cylinder of the higher level 2 is available for 25 to 70 euros. In level 3, locks cost between 40 and 100 euros.

If it is a VDS-certified lock, an amount of over 100 euros can be expected. Some of the locks are delivered with five keys. If you need additional keys, you should expect 10 to 15 euros per key.

These costs are to be expected for the installation

If at least one key is available and the lock can be used, most businesses charge between 60 and 80 euros for the installation. If there is no key, a further 60 to 80 euros will be charged for the expansion.

Things to note when replacing a door lock

The lock in the door is important for security. The selection should therefore not be influenced by costs.

Choice of security level

Externally, locks of security level 1 and 2 do not differ from those of class 3. Locks of class 3 have between six and nine internal pins and a patented disc system. In addition, lateral scanning of the keys and other locks ensure a high level of protection against unauthorized opening. VDS locks meet class 3 and always have additional protection against forcible opening such as drilling open, pulling out or the use of impact picking.

Class 1 is suitable for doors that do not have to offer great protection. These can often be found in garden gates. Class 2 is sufficient for sheds in which nothing valuable is stored. Protection class 3 is required in any case for apartments and houses. The police recommend using locks with a VDS certificate. Many burglar insurances prescribe protection by such locks.

Types of locks

information

Half cylinders are only useful for doors that are not locked from the inside. These locks are ideal for garages or cupboards.

Common designs are profile double cylinders that can be locked from both sides with a key. These are available as short cylinders for thin doors. It makes sense to use locks with an emergency and hazard function, also known as a priority function or BSZ function, on apartment doors. These make it possible to open the door with a second key, even if a key is on the other side. This is a useful protection when there is a possibility of people locking themselves in who may not be able to open the door again later.

This function is not suitable for apartment doors with multi-point locks and armored bolts, because the system cannot transfer the high forces required when closing. In these cases, knob cylinders are useful. There is a knob on the inside. The doors can be locked and opened from the inside by turning the knob, while a key is required from the outside.
