What is HDMI over Ethernet and how does it work?
An additional advantage is that in most cases copper or fiber optic cabling has already been laid for data communication. Fiber optic extenders provide higher bandwidth and interference-free extensions at distances much greater than CATx extenders, but can be much more expensive. Another aspect to consider is that extensions with coax or VGA cables usually require a separate RS-232 or USB connection to carry a control signal to the display - another cable that must fit into the duct . CATx cables, on the other hand, can deliver both video and control signals over a single cable. How to send video over ethernet
Signal transmission over IP is a way to extend your video signals over long distances. The use of AV / KVM extension technology to transmit lossless video over fiber optic cables now enables video extension with resolutions up to 4K at 60 Hz over very long distances. This method provides enough bandwidth for high resolution DisplayPort 1.2 video signals, keyboard / mouse, USB 2.0, RS232, and audio.
High-end AV-over-IP systems installed in stadiums, for example, can use compression algorithms such as H.264 to send packetized data over increasingly long distances. Such a compression reduces the signal delay to two or three frames per second that are no longer perceptible. This provides viewers with an enhanced experience when viewing live or edited video content.
IP-based extension enables various video signals to be extended using standard (managed) Ethernet switches to support particularly long distances beyond the distances of 100 meters supported by CATx cabling.
How and when to use Ethernet over HDMI
HDMI in multiple rooms / digital signage
HDMI multicasting enables video and audio to be distributed to any display on a digital signage network. A single transmitter can deliver multimedia content to hundreds of displays without the need to run dedicated video cables from one equipment room to displays in different rooms. The combination of matrix switching and video extension solutions, USB extenders, and video and peripheral device extension and switching (as in classic KVM setups) gives users an almost endless number of configurations for their applications, e.g. B. Touch-sensitive signage displays and information and orientation displays in retail, healthcare and education, in public institutions and more.
Video wall processing
An IP-based control device can be used to turn any video distribution configuration into an AV matrix switching or even video wall control configuration that allows users to view content from any source on any display. When multiple AV receivers are combined for display on a video wall, users can create specific content zones and control content remotely. The mobile support of such a system enables users to easily access and activate preset video wall configurations from a mobile phone or tablet device.
Video matrix switching
A video matrix switch, also known as a crosspoint switch, is a type of switch that connects multiple inputs to multiple outputs and can be configured to have supported types and a supported number of inputs (e.g. HDMI content Player) and outputs (e.g. screens). Any input on the switch can be routed to any output source or receiver, or the same input can be routed to all outputs, or any combination thereof. For example, an 8 x 8 matrix switch can route 8 inputs to 8 outputs, one input to 8 outputs, or any combination of up to 8. This eliminates the need to manually switch cables to view video from different sources on different screens.
A video matrix switching configuration allows multiple digital or analog sources to be switched to multiple digital displays in any combination. At the same time, HDMI signals can be amplified and easily routed from multiple video sources (e.g. PCs, DVD players, tablets) to various display devices (e.g. LCDs, projectors, etc.) and speakers.
HDMI over Ethernet device types
HDMI splitters split HDMI signals for display on multiple screens and can also be used to split audio apart from video channels. This enables accurate, reliable digital video reproduction without distortion and attenuation. Shared audio channels may be necessary in any environment where speakers or PAs are installed regardless of the visual output, e.g. B. in shopping centers or on a school campus.

HDMI converter & scaler
HDMI converters enable conversion of digital HDMI to analog VGA, SDI or component video (or vice versa) with either digital audio or analog stereo audio. The devices offer a cost-effective solution for connecting old, non-digital displays to newer HDMI or DVI sources.

Classic (directly connected) KVM extenders transmit video signals via glass fiber or CATx over long distances (CATx up to 100 m, glass fiber up to 10 kilometers).

HDMI ethernet extender
IP extension is a way to extend your AV signals over long distances. The technology is flexible, future-proof and offers you the option of using CATx or fiber optic cabling, depending on how far the signals are to be extended and which signals have to be transmitted. IP-based extenders usually send data over segments of 100 m, using Ethernet switches as repeaters, however, further distances are possible. When using fiber optic cables, signals can be extended up to 16 km.

HDMI-to-IP Encoder and Decoder / HDMI-to-IP Streamer
While HDMI-to-IP encoders allow you to convert HDMI video and analog audio input signals to H.264 for streaming over an IP network connection, HDMI-to-IP decoders decrypt the compressed IP data stream to save it on a View remote output devices. These devices are also known as IP streamers when used with specific codecs.
