Troubleshoot receiving messages

Signal uses your phone's internet connection for all confidential communications. The most common cause of failure to receive messages despite an Internet connection is a restriction on Internet access for Signal or the lack of permission to run programs or transfer data in the background.

  • Re-enable the application permissions for Signal on your phone.
  • Disable or change the settings for any third-party app, VPN, or firewall that restrict Signal's Internet access.
  • Allow Signal to run in the background and when the battery is low. On some phones, this setting can be found under Doze Mode, Energy Saving Mode, Battery Optimization, or Power Management.

Basic troubleshooting

  1. Update Signal to the latest version of Signal for Android and enable all of the application permissions listed above.
  2. Update the Google Play services app on your mobile phone and activate all application permissions.
  3. Allow Signal to start automatically and run in the background. Activate phone-specific settings.
  4. Check system-specific settings.

Why can I send Signal messages but not receive messages?
If your messages are as Posted but you are not receiving any messages from Signal,

  • In case of groups-Chats, ask a group member to add you to the group by entering your phone number instead of selecting your contact entry.
  • For individualConversations, try the registration again using the steps below
    1. In Signal, tap your profile > Extended > Signal messages and calls > OK to deregister.
    2. Tap againSignal messages and callsto re-register.
    3. Enter or edit your phone number.
    4. Tapto register and complete the registration process.
    5. Send messages in Signal.
    6. For groups, ask another group member to update the group name or group photo.

My unsafe SMS / MMS are not being sent, what can I do?
Text messages sent as part of your cellular phone contract are insecure and require an active connection to the cellular network. These messages can result in costs according to the regulation in your mobile phone contract.

  1. Make sure that you can use SMS (text) and MMS (media content) as part of your mobile phone contract.
  2. Check the balance on your mobile phone plan to send SMS / MMS. Transfer funds when your account is empty.
  3. Make sure your mobile phone is connected to the internet.
  4. Activate in the signal settings > SMS and MMS ┬╗Compatibility WLAN telephony┬ź and try again.
  5. Make sure all application permissions are enabled for Signal.
  6. Follow the additional troubleshooting steps for sending MMS messages.

Why are unsafe messages being sent to my other SMS app?
In addition to supporting end-to-end encryption of messages and calls between Signal users, Signal Android offers the option of acting as the standard app for SMS / MMS. If you've recently updated your Android system, temporarily disable Signal as the default messenger app and then reset it.

How do I deactivate and reactivate Signal as my default messenger?
In Signal, tap your profile  > SMS and MMS > type SMS activated to choose another app, then go back to Signal and tap SMS deactivated to set Signal back as your default SMS / MMS app.

 


Basic troubleshooting

  1. Update Signal to the latest version of Signal iOS and enable all of the application permissions listed above.
  2. Confirm that you have enabled all notification permissions for Signal.
  • iPhone settings  > signal > Notifications > Activate all notifications.
  • Activate sounds, badge app icon and notifications on the lock screen.

  • Reregister for notifications: Signal settingsAdvanced settings  >  Renew push registration  >  OK.
  • For notification tones
    • Activate sounds in operating system permissions as described above.
    • Put your device out of silent / vibrate mode where the external switch doesn't glow orange.
    • Activate tones during conversation in the alert settings> Notifications>Sounds during conversation.

     


    Basic troubleshooting

    1. If you have firewall-restricted Wi-Fi, contact your network administrator.
    2. If Signal Desktop has been inactive for 30 days or more,
      • all messages that have not yet been delivered will be deleted.
      • no messages will be received from the period in which it was offline.
      • it will be treated as a brand new linked device.

    Why can I send Signal messages but not receive messages?
    If your messages are as Posted but you are not receiving any messages from Signal,

    • In case of groups-Chats, ask a group member to add you to the group by entering your phone number instead of selecting your contact entry.
    • In case of One-on-one chats restart your computer and Signal Desktop. If you recently reinstalled Signal on your phone, you will need to pair Signal Desktop again.
