Is sucralose safe for health?

In this case, opinions differ a little. In general, it can be said that a food additive that is approved in the EU is in most cases a safe thing and there are a number of studies that suggest that sucralose has no toxic properties or any other side effects are known. Again, there are voices claiming that the sweetener is believed to be responsible for some serious illnesses and ailments. Regular intake of the sugar substitute is said to affect the brain and the rest of the nervous system, cause migraines, promote the development of cancer and damage the immune system.


In addition, a series of tests by Israeli researchers at the end of 2014 showed that exactly such organochlorine compounds as sucralose promote a certain group of bacteria in the intestinal flora that reduce glucose tolerance and in around 60% of the people involved in the test led to a precursor of diabetes.

Diabetes and intolerance

The paradox is that the sweetener is ideal for diabetics. Long-term studies have shown that sucralose has no effect on blood glucose or insulin levels, even when taken in high doses over a long period of time.

Sucralose and the Environment

A special feature is that the sugar substitute is not recognized as a carbohydrate by the human body. This means that it is not metabolized and thus enters our environment via the wastewater. The fatal thing is that it is an organochlorine compound which is only very slowly broken down by the environment and as such becomes a burden and can be detected for a very long time (in rivers and fish, for example).

Do I have to pay attention to something when using it?

The (recommended) permitted daily dose is 15 mg per kg of body weight (which corresponds to 9 g of sugar per kg) and should not be exceeded. But who of us consumes 720 g of sugar a day (assuming a body weight of 80 kg). If you want to try sucralose, I recommend viewing it as a supplement, rather than as a sweetener on its own. When used correctly, it can, for example, optimally support you with your diet and / or relieve the body of sugar addiction.

Is Sucralose Right For My Diet?

The sweetener is an extremely good sugar substitute and ideally suited as a supplement to a diet. Since it does not affect the insulin level, it does not affect our feeling of hunger and thus does not lead us into temptation.

Is sucralose suitable for cooking & baking?

The sweetener has excellent miscibility with other foods. It is also very heat-resistant, which makes it an ideal choice for baking, cooking or frying. Its sweetness can also be kept for a long time, which is of course the most important thing of all! Since it is made of sugar, it tastes like that and does not have an aftertaste like many others.

Sucralose - a conclusion

The sweetener is really extremely suitable for cooking and baking and tastes wonderfully like sugar. However, it is a chemically manufactured product and opinions differ about its safety. But in the right dosage, sucralose is by no means a health risk and you can safely try it around. Cooking now and then YES! Sole sweetener NO! Perhaps you will experiment with different sweeteners and their interaction.
