What are the most active Twitter communities

Ranking: The Twitter accounts with the most followers

Twitter gives celebrities a type of access that was previously considered impossible. People can now tweet directly to the account they are following and communicate directly with the people who were previously inaccessible.

Having lots of followers can be great for selling products and promoting yourself, and that explains why so many big names spend time on the platform.

Here is a list of the Twitter accounts with the most followers.

20. CNN (53.7 million followers)

We start the list with news and the only news channel in the list. Many (including me) use Twitter primarily to keep up to date.

The account is exactly what you expect. Regular tweets of news around the world.

Accounts of hearing sounds from the northern lights are not unusual, but there has been little scientific research into the phenomenon. https://t.co/c2XPrgt7GE

19. Bill Gates (54.7 million followers)

Bill Gates, one of the founders of Microsoft and incredibly wealthy, starts our list. Even though he's made his name in the tech industry, he spends a lot of time with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

After 20 years of stunning advances toward global goals to improve health and reduce poverty, the COVID-19 pandemic stopped progress in its tracks. In our foundation’s Goalkeepers report, we survey the damage and discuss how to start reversing it. https://t.co/5e41bGrlUp

18. Demi Lovato (55.2 million followers)

Demi Lovato is another pop star on this list. The account has been active again since January 2020 and quickly received millions of new followers, making it into the top 20.

The account, possibly managed by your press team, primarily promotes your music and events.

17. Britney Spears (56M followers)

Another pop star on this list (and certainly not the last) is Britney Spears. Since becoming a worldwide teenage sensation, her career has been a mix of controversy and success. Even if she is overshadowed by other pop stars today, she is still one of the most famous personalities in the world.

With fame comes followers, but Britney also has some big celebrities as her followers. Drake, Cher and Janet Jackson follow her.

Your Twitter account shows the usual. Updates on their music and tours, behind-the-scenes videos and personal posts.

16. Twitter (59.5 million followers)

Not really a surprise that the platform we're talking about has one of the top spots for the account.

There isn't really much to say here. Users follow the Twitter account because news and developments are posted here or because they simply like Twitter.

In addition to new updates on the app and platform and other relevant content on Twitter, the account is based on the short, often cryptic, tweets that are typical of Twitter and that hardly make sense. The weird nature of Twitter has kind of taken over here.

15. CNN Breaking News (61.3 million followers)

Here's another Twitter account from CNN. The broadcaster shares the latest news and breaking news on this account. Over 61 million people follow the Twitter channel to stay up to date.

14. Justin Timberlake (64.1M followers)

Timberlake is a former member of a boy band and is now very successful as a solo artist, as shown by tens of millions of Twitter followers.

Perhaps Timberlake's social media experience isn't surprising considering he starred in the movie The Social Network.

There isn't much advertising on his Twitter account, he shares more videos and photos from his personal life. It looks a lot more like an Instagram page than any of the others on this list.

13. Selena Gomez (65M Followers)

Pop stars are doing really well on Twitter and next up is Selena Gomez. She is one of the greatest actors on the planet and is also a well-known actress. So no surprise she made the list.

She ranks 6th among the most influential women on Twitter, and among the tens of millions of followers are Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake and Emma Watson.

Selena’s Twitter account is mainly dedicated to promoting her music and acting career with occasional thank you tweets to celebrity friends and their personal thoughts.

12.Narendra Modi (67.7 million followers)

Our first politician on the list is India's Prime Minister Modi. Modi is probably pretty happy to be on the list. He has been an avid Twitter user since 2009 and recognized the influence social media can have on politics early on.

Since taking office in 2014, his following has grown steadily. If you want to learn more about his progress, you can read more about his decade on Twitter here.

Modi uses his account as you would expect from a politician and head of state. He promotes his party, talks about his country's problems and tweets about diplomacy between India and other countries.

Best wishes to the Chief Minister of Mizoram, Mr. @ZoramthangaCM on his birthday. One of the senior most and respected leaders in our polity, he has worked extensively for the welfare of Mizoram. May Almighty bless him with a long and healthy life in service of the people.

11. Kim Kardashian West (69.7M followers)

Kim Kardashian and social media are very closely linked. The globally famous businesswoman and television personality has a huge number of followers on every social media platform she uses.

She is ranked 3rd among Most Influential Women on Twitter, and Ariana Grande, Sofia Vergara, and Serena Williams are following her.

She used her account in much the same way as other people on this list. There is a lot of advertising (especially about her KKW Beauty company) as well as more general news about her life.

For all of the things that could be trending, this is super funny to me that so many are concerned about a pic i posted 2 years ago. It's the sweet corn truffle pasta from the best restaurant ever, Georgio Baldi in Santa Monica. They are open for take out. I highly recommend. pic.twitter.com/kCRbbFUZKg

10. YouTube (73.2 million followers)

YouTube is in 9th place ahead of Twitter’s own account. The popularity of YouTube, the second most popular site according to Alexa, extends to other platforms and the account is one of the most successful accounts on Twitter.

In addition to the crisp bio-statement "Pivoting to Video", the YouTube account is pretty straightforward. It simply posts short video clips and links to videos on their platform. Simple and a great way to put certain YouTubers in the spotlight.

9. Ellen DeGeneres (79 million followers)

Ellen DeGeneres, also in the talk show business, surpasses Fallon to place 8. She is the presenter of the very popular Ellen Show and her high audience figures also made her a hit on Twitter.

We suspect that your famous Oscar tweet, and for a while the tweet with most of the retweets, also has something to do with your high number of followers.

Technically, the account is for their show (the account is called @TheEllenShow) and pretty much all of the tweets are photos and videos promoting them. Every now and then, however, some personal tweets appear.

Seeing everyone’s posts about Carl Reiner makes you realize what an incredible legacy of laughter he left behind. I was inspired by his talent and his humanity, and I send love to his family.

8. Ariana Grande (83.2M followers)

The past few years have been very successful for Ariana Grande and thanks to ongoing hits, she has rarely been out of the headlines. With the release of her song "Thank u, next" she caused a storm on Twitter and it is not surprising that she appears on this list.

Her followers are also pretty star studded, among other things. with Jared Leto, Harry Styles and Lindsay Lohan.

Grande not only posts personal and promotional tweets, but also regularly thanks her fans.

7. Lady Gaga (84.2 million followers)

With great success in music and acting, especially with her recent performance in A Star is Born, Lady Gaga secured 6th place in the list of the most followed Twitter accounts.

According to our research, she is the 10th most influential women on Twitter and therefore has a good response from her audience. Miley Cyrus, David Guetta and Oprah Winfrey, among others, follow her.

Her account mainly consists of news about her music and acting as well as activities related to her Born This Way Foundation.

6. Taylor Swift (88.9M followers)

We are nearing the final places and in 5th place is Taylor Swift. She is one of the biggest pop stars worldwide and can not only boast fame and fortune, but also many Twitter followers.

Swift is also the most influential person on Twitter, according to our analysis. And since Taylor Swift barely tweets, it makes the whole thing even more impressive.

In 2018 she only tweeted over 20 times and that's it. She hasn't released one in 2019 so far. Your 83.4 million followers are definitely very patient.

5. Cristiano Ronaldo (92 million followers)

Our only athlete on this list, Cristiano Ronaldo and arguably the best soccer player on the planet, made it to 5th place. In addition to serving for the Portuguese national team, he has played for the biggest clubs in the world including Juventus Turin, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Ranked # 5 for Most Influential Men on Twitter, Ronaldo has some big names among his followers like Lil Wayne, Jack Dorsey (the CEO of Twitter) and Usain Bolt.

His account is pretty consistent and his most recent tweets are mostly photos of him and his family spending time together or doing the things that very wealthy soccer players do.

4. Rihanna (102.7 million followers)

Another musician on our list (and not the last) is a megastar and beauty product entrepreneur: Rihanna. With a lot of hits and her successful company Fenty, she was able to gain a lot of followers on Twitter.

Rihanna's Twitter account also made the news a lot, especially when she criticized Donald Trump for using her songs in his rallies.

In addition to criticism of the president, Rihanna's Twitter account consists of the usual advertising content, but also personal tweets as well as thanks to partners and political posts.

3. Katy Perry (109.5M followers)

In second place is Katy Perry, a world famous pop star. From humble beginnings in the church choir, Perry grew to become one of the greatest musicians in the world.

Perry ranks second on Twitter's list of Most Influential Women and is followed by four members of One Direction (Zayn is the only one who doesn't), as well as Alicia Keys and Neil Patrick Harris.

What may explain her many followers is that Perry uses Twitter to post her own thoughts and personal messages instead of flooding the feed with promotional tweets (though she does have some).

People that say they don’t pick their nose are straight up LIARS

2. Justin Bieber (114.4 million followers)

Justin Bieber has had an almost constant presence since his 2010 hit "Baby". Since then he's been in the limelight, changing his style, getting older and is one of the biggest stars in the world.

Some of Bieber's well-known followers are Jaden Smith, Qeen Latifah, and Iggy Azalea. He's also ranked 3rd among the most influential men on Twitter.

His account has less advertising content compared to others on this list. He posts little and he often shares thoughts on all sorts of topics and the types of content that any other Twitter user would post.

1. Barack Obama (130.3 million followers)

In first place is the American President for two terms Barack Obama. Unsurprisingly, you get a lot of followers when you hold the most powerful office in the world.

Obama’s account made it into the headlines in 2019 with his positive New Year’s message with hope for the future, which was compared to Trump’s tirade in capital letters over the media a few hours earlier.

With the presidency behind him, Obama tweets mostly about his other activities, such as working for his Obama Foundation.

Congratulations to Barack Obama on having the most followers on Twitter!

This holiday weekend, let's be safe and smart. It's going to take all of us to beat this virus. So wear a mask. Wash your hands. And listen to the experts, not the folks trying to divide us. That's the only way we'll do this — together.https: //t.co/UwNKAzL8JU

What does this tell us about Twitter?

Real world celebrities are celebrities on Twitter too. If you ignore the accounts of the brands YouTube and Twitter, none of the accounts became famous through the Internet, almost all of them were famous before the existence of Twitter.

Even if there is a squadron of internet celebrities with a lot of followers, they only take the top rankings on YouTube and that could show that users on the platform who subscribe to channels are much different than users of Twitter.

It is also interesting to see which people and accounts made it into the top 20.

Musicians are very clear and when you consider that Twitter is often associated with world affairs and politics, that's surprising. However, there are two presidents and prime ministers on the list and who knows how that will change when the world changes too?

Celebrities (and probably big PR budgets too) win.

Let's see what the next decade will bring.
