Facebook and Co: Find out what companies save from you

Do you use Facebook, Google and Twitter and want to know what the networks have stored about you? You can find out with a few clicks. However, the results are not necessarily exhaustive. Other companies also require a little more effort. But in general you have the right to request all of the data that you have saved. You can use our sample letter for this.

How to download your Facebook data

The steps in these instructions relate to the use of Facebook in the desktop version with an Internet browser. They are similar for the Facebook app on smartphones and tablets.

  • Open the Facebook settings and there the menu item "Your Facebook information" (direct link there).
  • Click on "Download your information".
  • Then you can, among other things, select the period for which you want to download your data. You can select HTML as the file format so that you can later see the downloaded data with your installed browser. Media such as photos and videos are also downloaded. You can choose whether the quality should be high, medium or low. The higher the quality, the more megabytes your download will contain.
  • You can then select a number of areas from which you would like to receive your data.

How to find out what other companies store about you

If you would like to know what data a company has saved about you and there is no way to download this information, you can write to the company. An address must be in the imprint and every company is legally obliged to provide information about stored data. You can use our sample letter for this free of charge.
